Creativity is within everyone, whether they use it for their own personal job or just to recount a story, you are using creativity. Although there is no real definition of what creativity is, it can apply to anyone in any way shape or form. According to the Oxford Dictionary the definition of creativity is “The use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness” (“Creativity | Definition of Creativity by Lexico”, 2019), but does that really define what creativity is? The ‘Four C Model of Creativity’ divides all individuals into separate groups, dividing each person into groups on how they use creativity on a day to day basis (Refer to previous blog).
My personal definition of creativity is people coming up with ideas and developing them into conceptual ideas. However, this can vary from person to person on how their thought process works. Creativity always begins in the brain and will expand from there depending on who it is. Some could develop their ideas by talking to others, writing it out or just thinking about it. Depending on who it is and how they do it is the definition of creativity, because there is no real definition on it.
In my day to day life I try and use my creative skills as much as I can. Working on client videos, university assignments or my own personal projects, I’m never lacking in ways to flex my creative muscles. This allows me to face different creative challenges on a daily basis, varying from client decisions, editing problems or my own creative decisions. The two most important daily creative practices I do that uses my creativity is working on set and editing. Each of which comes with there own set of decision making and skill that is needed. Whilst on set the main decisions and creative practices I use are:
- Making a creative decision to overall effect the production
- Choosing different camera movement, angles and shot sizes
- Working with others to create a better final product
- Creating whilst having a final product or audience in mind
If I’m not on set, I spend my days at home editing projects there is also a set of skills and problem solving issues that I have to solve. A lot of different decisions have to be made within the editing process, these include:
- Deciding on what shots to use
- Making choices within the edit to please a client
- Having the ability to edit in multiple different styles for a diverse amount of projects
- Using my selected software (Premiere Pro) to its maximum potential to reach a final product
When working on different projects or productions I have a list of different ways that I deal with this issue whether being a standard problem or creative decision on set. Every problem will always have a logical solution to it, this is the same with any creative issue. Over the last few years film making has become a serious part of my life. Starting my own business has given me a reason to create on a daily basis not just for clients but also for myself. Working on multiple different projects whilst dealing with a range or different clients has allowed me to refine my creativity and problem solving skills to reach better and final products.
